La cineasta danesa Susanne Kovács siempre supo que sus abuelos paternos habían sobrevivido al Holocausto y huido a Dinamarca para comenzar una nueva vida. Pero eso era lo único que sabía de ellos. La pareja húngara mantuvo su historia oculta bajo mil cerrojos a lo largo de su vida y se esforzó en sumergirse de lleno en la vida cotidiana danesa lo más rápido posible. Si nadie era capaz de descubrir la oscuridad —pensaban—, la normalidad sería posible. Para escapar del recuerdo de la muerte, sonreían y guardaban silencio. Pero, a pesar de sus esfuerzos, lo nunca dicho no se desvaneció, sino que creció hasta invadir el presente. Cuando ya en su juventud Kovács comienza a hacer preguntas sobre su pasado, descubre que en su familia existe una guerra que aún no ha terminado.

Partiendo de la intrahistoria y las heridas psicológicas todavía abiertas de la familia de su directora , It takes a family reflexiona sobre la complejidad de las relaciones familiares en personas que han sobrevivido al Holocausto. Desde el momento en que Kovács comienza a buscar respuestas únicamente se le plantean más preguntas: ¿Es legítimo invocar los fantasmas del pasado en contra de la voluntad de su abuela? ¿Por qué no permanecer en silencio después de tanto tiempo? ¿Qué versión de la verdad es real? Como respuesta a estos y otros interrogantes surge un valiente y honesto documental sobre los horrores de la guerra que no gira tanto en torno a la culpa como al perdón.

Danish filmmaker Susanne Kovács has always known her paternal grandparents survived the Holocaust and fled to Denmark to start a new life. But that’s all she knew about them. The Hungarian couple kept their own story under lock and key throughout their lives and focused on immersing themselves into Danish everyday life as quickly as possible. If no one catches a glimpse of the darkness, they thought, normalcy becomes possible. To escape the memory of death, they would smile and keep quiet. But, despite their efforts, the unsaid did not fade but grew and finally began to darken the present. When, during her youth, Kovács began asking questions about their past, she discovered a war waged by her family which is still going on.

With the inner-history and the psychological—and still open—wounds of the director’s family as starting point, It Takes a Family reflects on the complexity of family relationships among Holocaust survivors. From the moment Kóvacs begins to seek answers, only more questions arise: Should she dig up the ghosts of the past against her grandmother’s will? Why not remain silent after all this time? Which version of the truth is real? A courageous and honest documentary about the horrors of war—which does not revolve so much around guilt as around forgiveness—arises as the answer to these and other questions.

Susanne Kovács es directora de televisión de la Escuela Danesa de Periodismo y Medios de Comunicación. Anteriormente estudió bellas artes y narrativa en Alemania y se formó como cineasta en el European Film College de Ebeltoft, Dinamarca. It takes a family (2019) es su primer largometraje documental.

Susanne Kovács is a TV director from the Danish Media and Journalism School. She previously studied fine arts and narrative storytelling in Germany and trained as a filmmaker at The European Film College in Ebeltoft in Denmark. It Takes a Family (2019) is her first feature-length documentary.
