A punto de comenzar su primer año de secundaria, todo son dudas y preocupaciones para Mylia. Su hermana menor le hace la vida imposible ante la inminencia de quedarse sola. Debatiéndose todavía entre niñez y adolescencia, pronto deberá decidir entre intentar encajar socialmente o permitir que aflore su propia personalidad. Como trasfondo, se observa la vida en una pequeña ciudad canadiense, la presencia de los nativos abenaki y la historia de una colonia llena de paradojas y contradicciones, cuyas sombras se reflejan también en las vidas de sus habitantes.
Para construir una narración sobre la adolescencia se requiere partir de una postura en la que el acercamiento sea transparente, reconociendo su sensibilidad, su conocimiento y sus sentimientos. Reinterpretar la infancia conlleva el cuestionamiento de las relaciones de poder, de la soberbia sobrevalorada que acarrea la experiencia y de las estructuras pedagógicas y políticas que les han negado autonomía en muchas de sus esferas de desarrollo. Dulude-De Celles logra adentrarse en el universo de la joven Mylia siendo plenamente consciente de todo ello con total honestidad, para poner sobre la mesa valores como la tolerancia, los pasados tortuosos, o incluso, el racismo, sin caer en el cliché o en subrayados absurdos. El resultado es un sutil y esperanzador alegato sobre el mito de la adolescencia, sobre esos años previos a la mayoría de edad en los que las bases de la persona que será en el futuro comienzan a asentarse.
About to start her first year of secondary school, Mylia is full of doubts and worries. Her little sister is making her life miserable as a reaction to being left on her own. Still struggling between childhood and adolescence, she will soon have to choose between fitting in or allowing her personality to flourish. As a backdrop, we witness life in a small Canadian town, the presence of Abenaki Native Americans and the history of a colony wrestling with paradoxes and contradictions that also reflect their shadows on the lives of its inhabitants.
In order to build a narrative about adolescence, one must set out from a position where the approach is transparent, acknowledging their sensitivity, their knowledge and their feelings. Reinterpreting childhood leads to questioning power relationships, the overrated arrogance that comes with experience, and the educational and political structures that have deprived them of autonomy in many of their areas of development. Dulude-De Celles manages to go deep into young Mylia’s world, utterly aware and with complete honesty, to lay out values such as tolerance, tortuous pasts, or even racism, without becoming a cliché or overemphasizing anything. The result is a subtle and hopeful statement on the myth of adolescence, on those years before reaching adulthood where the foundation of the future person begins to be laid.

Después de estudiar cine y fotografía, Geneviève enseñó cinematografía en una escuela francesa en Bucarest. A su regreso a Quebec, se especializó en dirección de cine. Su primer corto, La coupe (2014) logró el premio al mejor cortometraje en el Festival de Sundance. Es cofundadora de la productora Colonelle Films. A colony es su ópera prima.
After studying film and photography, Geneviève taught cinematography at a French school in Bucharest. Upon her return to Quebec, she specialized in film directing. Her first short, La Coupe (2014), earned her the Short Film Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival. She co-founded the production company Colonelle Films. A Colony is her first fiction feature.
